Makalu National Park covers 2330 sq. km which is a home of the great Makalu (8463m), Chamlang (7319m) and Baruntse (7129m). Makalu National park is a low altitude trekking area. It is also a restricted zone but Arun valley is available with its crowded forests, terraced fields and alpine terrain. The trail passes the Arun, Koshi and Barun valley through the yak grazing meadows and the glaciers to reach the Makalu Base Camp, from where the vista of the Everest, Makalu and Lhotse is fantastic. The Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Project established in 1992 is a major habitat for several endangered species.
